Attica, the …Caribbean of the Germans

After the Greek islands, the Germans are discovering the northern suburbs of Athens, looking for holiday homes in this area. “Greece, the new Caribbean of the Germans” is the title of an article in the Sunday edition of Bild, which claims that Germans looking for a house in Greece are now more than the Chinese. Of course, it points out, the Chinese “dominate the market, as they also get a visa when they buy a luxury property. On the contrary, very few Germans are looking for luxury. The German middle class mainly buys houses and apartments at prices that fluctuate around 250,000 euros”.

According to the German newspaper, “south of Athens, companies from the Arabic-speaking area are investing many millions around the old airport. They call the area ‘Riviera’ and sell (the apartments) to very rich Arabs, Chinese, Russians, and Israelis.

Why do Germans prefer the northern suburbs? As Yiannis Ziavras, director of the Athens branch of the multinational real estate company Remax, explains to Bild, the area has not yet been developed in terms of tourism, it is “like the southern suburbs were 40 years ago”, but today it is “the best market for buying a second home”. As the newspaper notes, “Athens has cultural activity, good food, good shopping, and, above all, clinics and doctors for the elderly. The area north of Athens has peace, the sea, and good prices. So far, only 10% of property buyers in the area come from abroad”.
