Effort under way to rescue Norwegian hiker on Crete Lefka Ori mountains

A major effort was under way amid unfavorable weather conditions on Tuesday to rescue a 33-year-old Norwegian mountain climber trapped at an altitude of 2,200 meters on Crete’s Lefka Oroi (White Mountains) range, ekathimerini reports.

According to the Hania town fire chief, rescue crews are hampered by fog, rain and snow as they try to reach the hiker’s location.

The unnamed Norwegian man reportedly became trapped on the mountain on Monday night and camped out in a cave, calling his brother on Tuesday morning to explain his predicament and ask for help.

Rescuers are fighting the clock to reach the 33-year-old hiker before nightfall, as they are concerned that may already be exhibiting signs of hypothermia.
