Rescue workers on Tuesday finally reached a 30-year-old Romanian hiker that became trapped on a cliff face at 2,800 metres altitude, after losing his way during a climb of Mount Olympus in Thessaly, Greece last Saturday. According to the Central Macedonia Region Fire Brigade chief Constantinos Poultidis, the hiker appears to be in good health in spite of his ordeal and an operation was now underway to take him to safety.
The Romanian called emergency rescue agencies on Saturday evening, explaining that he was trapped on a cliff face and had lost his way while trying to reach the peak of the mountain. A search was immediately launched by standby rescuers from the Hellenic Rescue Team stationed on the mountain and later joined by EMAK emergency rescue teams from Thessaloniki and Larissa. Their efforts were greatly hampered by the bad weather and low temperatures, however, which led to snowfall on Mount Olympus on Monday, as well as the difficult terrain.
