Preparatory work for the construction of the Holocaust Museum in Thessaloniki, is expected to start over the next few days, ANA reports.
Plans are due to be completed in 2018 so that a tender for the project can be held, the president of the Jewish Community David Saltiel noted on Monday speaking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency’s radio station.
He estimated that the museum will be finished towards the end of 2019, and showcase all the known and unknown sides of Jewish history and the history of Thessaloniki. It will be as important a project as the Stavros Niarchos Foundation’s cultural centre in Athens, he explained.
It will be a six-storey circular building of metal and glass, with a height of 32 metres, constructed in a lot owned by GAIAOSE, on the symbolic spot where the death trains set off on their journeys during WWII, ultimately carrying 55,000 Jews from Thessaloniki to Nazi concentration camps.
