A rescued wild bear that researchers named ‘Christina’ has woken from her winter hibernation and has started wandering the Falakros mountain range, according to signals from a radio collar fitted after her rescue, the wildlife protection organisation “Callisto” reported on Monday, according to ANA.
The bear was rescued on Christmas Day in 2017 after falling and becoming trapped in a freezing reservoir in the woodlands of Nevrokopi, Drama. Her rescue was effected by Callisto, state forest services, the Macedonia-Thrace hunters’ association and the fire brigade and afterward she was fitted with a special collar with a radio beacon, so that her movements can be traced.
According to Callisto’s announcement, the beacon has begun sending a signal from various locations, showing that the bear was moving between the Falakros range and the Vrontou-Lailia mountains, indicating the importance of this mountain habitat for bears and as a connecting link between the two sub-populations of bears in Eastern Macedonia: that in the Rodopi National Park and that in the Orvilos area.
