Nearly two billion euros were spent by senior tourists (65+) who visited Greece for holidays in 2016.
This is one of the main conclusions of a study by SETE Intelligence (IΝSETE) – the Greek Tourism Confederation’s (SETE) research body based on data by tourism marketing consultants IPK International.
Seniors who visited Greece accounted for 1,7 million trips (6.1% of all trips to the country including cruises) 16.5 million overnight stays (8.5% of all overnight stays including cruises).
Those from European markets accounted for 93% of the total visitors, 93% of the overnight stays and 76% of the expenditure while non-Europeans accounted for 7% of overnights and visits as well as 24% of the expenditure.
Greece was the 7th most popular destination among European markets and the 10th most popular for non-Europeans, with market shares of 5% and 4% respectively.
The top European source markets for Greece were the United Kingdom (404 thousand), Germany (336 thousand) and France (238 thousand). In non-European markets, the US represent 49% of non-European travel, 58% of overnight stays and 43% of spending.
Elderly tourists who visited European holiday destinations in 2016 reached 35.9 million with 8 million overnight stays and 41 billion euros spending. The average cost per trip amounted to 1,142 euros while the average cost per day was 119 euros.
On the occasion of publishing the study, Mr. Aris Ikkos, IΝSETE’s research director, said:
“The market for senior tourists is both large and rich and taking into account the demographic trends, it is very dynamic on a global scale. The adaptation of the Greek tourist product to the requirements and desires of the specific customers will empower us to exploit the natural and cultural wealth of the country, as well as extend the season and increase revenues. The ingredients exist and they only need to be mixed in such a way so as to create the right product that will allow the growth of incoming travel by senior tourists.”
