Xylouris White, the acclaimed duo playing Cretan music of original and traditional composition, will be touring Australia in June.
Georgios Xylouris on Cretan laouto and vocals with Jim White on drums will play the Utzon Room, Sydney Opera House, on June 1; The Corner Hotel, Richmond on June 2; and GOMA, Brisbane on June 8.
Xylouris is one of Crete‘s most popular and inventive musicians, coming from a family of renowned Greek artists. Xylouris and White met through mutual friends in Melbourne when Xylouris was living in Australia in the early ’90s.
The Greek musician cooperated with White’s band Dirty Three on several occasions, while both artists accompanied Psarandonis — Xylouris’ father and one of Greece’s most famous songwriters and lyra performers — on a couple of tours before forming Xylouris White.
Cretan dance music entwined with post-rock, free jazz and minimalism
Their collaboration offers an ideal mixture of cultures and musical traditions, filled with Cretan dance music entwined with post-rock, free jazz and minimalism, creating fresh and exciting melodies.
Their latest album, Mother, was released early in 2018.
Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, White noted that wherever they perform, Greeks are always in the audience.
“We’re pretty hard-pressed to have a show where there are no Greeks in the audience — along with the rock ‘n’ roll people.”
“In some cities it’s quite a big presence, and that’s always a great show, because the two audiences sort of feed off each other, and it’s amazing at times when everybody’s dancing,” White added.
