According to conservation group Archelon Society more than 1,360 turtle nests were found and identified on the island’s beaches from May to July 22, making it a record year in terms of births for the Caretta turtle.
The number of nests marks an increase of 139% compared to the same period last year where just 545 nests were located.
The endangered loggerhead sea turtle flourishes in Sekania beach, on the island’s eastern peninsula, hosting 750 of the identified nests.
