The proceeds from the Enthronement luncheon for His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros will be used for the construction of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine, according to a statement released on Tuesday by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, greekreporter.com notes.
The donation, amounting to $260,000, represents the net proceeds from the formal luncheon, which was attended by more than 1,700 people, including representatives from various organizations and parishes. The money will be used to fund the long-delayed reconstruction of the New York church, which was totally destroyed on 9/11.
His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros pointed out in an official statement: “I was immensely moved by the number of faithful who traveled from near and far to participate in my Enthronement. I wish to thank all the generous parishes, organizations and faithful who contributed to the Enthronement Luncheon and whose presence made the day extraordinary.
“From the start, I asked that the net proceeds of the Luncheon be restricted for the construction of St. Nicholas Church and National Shine and I am so pleased with this significant donation,” His Eminence added.
