The link between education and the needs of the labour market was the issue of a debate organised by the American College of Athens under the auspices of the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV), ANA reports.
Deputy Education Minister Vasilis Digalakis pointed to the upgrading of the Independent Authority for the evaluation of universities, the creation of new graduate and postgraduate programmes in English and the support of research as key elements of ministry planning.
On his part, SEV president Theodoros Fessas stressed that education is a catalyst for a country’s economic growth,” noting the need for technical education to be linked with the labour market. “Greece has a high-level in arts and humanities education but is low in the STEM disciplines,” he said and pointed out the need for more doctoral theses in the field of industry.
The chairman of the American College David Horner referred to the three challenges that Greece should meet in order for the education to become a lever of growth for society and the economy.
“First, private investments with an emphasis on strategic sectors, second, the promotion of innovation and entrepreneurship and third, the further development of leadership skills,” he pointed out.
