“The 80 Goes to Sparta” is a touching documentary showing the life of Greeks living in Montreal in the late 1960s, produced by the National Film Board of Canada, according to greekreporter.com.
Writer and director Bill Davies opens with a shot from within the #80 bus line and from then presents the lifestyle of Greeks who lived during that era.
The documentary has an incisive view of the economic and cultural problems Greeks faced at the time and the “filotimo” that kept them afloat in a world they were not very familiar with.
It was the strong bonds of the Greek community which kept them together, faithful to their compatriots and focused on creating a new life in the New World. Occasionally asking for assistance and support from other Greeks and associations like the Cretan Association, or from charitable organizations, they managed to build a life in their new homeland.
For younger viewers and those who have no relation to Greek-Canadians, it is a riveting documentary showing a snapshot of a population during a particular place and time.
