US State Secretary met with Ecumenical Patriarch in Constantinople

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived in Constantinople Tuesday morning where he met with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to discuss religious issues in Turkey and to promote a “strong US commitment to religious freedom throughout the world”, int.ert.gr reports.

No meetings with Turkish officials are scheduled during the brief visit of Pompeo in the country.

Earlier in Paris, the US official had talks with French President Emmanuel Macron.

“Macron and I spent a lot of time discussing Turkey’s recent actions and we agreed that they are very aggressive,” he told the French newspaper, Le Figaro.

“Europe and the United States must work together to convince Erdogan that such actions are not in the interest of his people, “ he said.
