Τhe Ziller-Loverdos Mansion on Mavromichali street in downtown Athens, an architectural jewel for Athens, opened to the public on May 18, which is International Museum Day, ANA reports.
“On the occasion of today’s celebration, we chose to deliver the Ziller-Loverdos Mansion to the Athenians and the city’s visitors. Initially, it was the home of German architect Ernst Ziller, which was later bought by the banker Dionysios Loverdos,” noted Culture Minister Lina Mendoni.
According to Culture Ministry, the Mansion – which hosts the Loverdos collection – was constructed in 1882 by Ziller, who lived there until Loverdos bought it in 1912 and used it as both a residence and a museum for his rich collection of over 600 exhibits. It is one of the largest and important collections of post-Byzantine religious art in Greece.
The Culture Ministry prepared and released a short video providing a tour of the unique building, an annex of the Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens.
