Alexander Payne’s new film, ‘The Holdovers’, was presented at the 64th Thessaloniki International Film Festival on Sunday, November 2. With the central character being a college professor who teaches ancient Greek history and culture, the new film of the most prominent contemporary American filmmaker, a beloved friend of the festival, and a two-time Oscar-winning director and screenwriter of Greek descent, received a warm welcome in Greece’s second city. The movie has made its way around the world with screenings at other major international festivals and has received outstanding reviews.
During the press conference after the film screening, Alexander Payne talked about the choice of the lead actors and Paul Giamatti, whom he entrusted with the challenging role of the teacher, stating that he was confident of his success. “But with other actors – young college students – I spent several weeks casting them for their roles,” said the creator of the film based on a script by David Hemingson.
The film, which will be released in theaters on January 25, 2024, is a journey of self-discovery with the tender touch and humor of Alexander Payne, transporting us to a distinguished American college during the Christmas holidays in the 1970s.
