Ambassador to Athens: Sharp hike in American students choosing to study in Greece

Greece saw a record number of American students enrolling in Greek programs in the 2022-2023 academic year, according to the annual  “Open Doors 2024” report on international educational exchange by the Institute of International Education (IIE), ANA reports.

Specifically, the number of Americans who chose to study in Greece during the 2022-2023 academic year rose by roughly 34% compared to the previous academic year, from 4,484 students to over 6,000. 

According to the numbers, Greece remains among the top 10 destinations abroad for US students. Overall, the IIE report said, that 280,716 students from the United States studied abroad during the 2022-2023 academic year, with 64% selecting Europe as their destination.

The most popular destination was Italy (15%), followed by the United Kingdom (13%), Spain (12%), France (6%), Ireland (4%), Germany and Japan (3% each), and Greece, Australia, and Costa Rica (2% each).  

At the same time, the data indicated that the number of Greek students choosing to study in the United States rose as well, with 2,561 Greeks studying in American universities during the 2022-2023 academic year.
