1 in 4 fall in love while traveling – Valentine's Day survey

Travelers not only experience cultural experiences and adventures during their travels, but they often also experience love.

This finding is highlighted in a survey by the European hotel chain Meininger Hotels on the occasion of the upcoming Valentine’s Day.

The survey shows that:

  • More than a quarter of respondents (26.2%) reported falling in love during their trip. In fact, 16.4% reported finding true love.
Although not every romance on vacation leads to marriage, 16.4% of respondents said that their romance developed into a long-term relationship, while 45.8% reported that they experienced a short-term relationship.
  • Almost 40% believe that travel creates a romantic mood, which is why travelers are prone to falling in love. This can be attributed to the relaxed atmosphere of the holidays, the openness to new experiences, and the opportunity to meet people with the same philosophy of life as them. In general, traveling is a great way to meet people who have similar interests and tastes.
  • Love is forged by the sea. The survey revealed that almost half (46.2%) met their partner during a beach holiday. City breaks ranked second, with 21.8%. Adventure and activity holidays follow with 9.2%.
  • In contrast, love seems less likely to blossom during business trips (3.8%), cruises (3.4%) or long-term trips abroad, related to work and personal matters.
  • However, if a traveler is to find love, it will happen in the first few days. 71.8% of those surveyed said that love blossomed within just a few days. In addition, 20.6% experienced the romance of their vacation during their trip, for example, on a plane or train.
  • Does vacation love last? 25.3% said that vacation romances did not last long. However, it was worth living this experience…

Paris is the most romantic city

Anyone who wants to surprise their loved one with a spontaneous romantic trip on Valentine’s Day should quickly book a ticket to Paris. 32.3% “voted” Paris as the most popular destination for this Day, as the city offers a unique romantic atmosphere.

Venice (20.1%) and Rome (19.9%) ranked second and third on the list of the most romantic cities of those surveyed.
