The Municipality of Meteora has decided to conclude a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Tourism, for the Management and Promotion of the Municipality of Meteora as a Model Tourist Destination within the framework of the action “Tourism Development and Destination Management” of the Ministry’s National Development and Resilience Plan.
This action aims to improve the management of tourist destinations through the creation and operation of local and regional Destination Management and Promotion Organizations (DMMOs), as well as their interconnection with the National Observatory for Sustainable Tourism Development.
Specifically, according to Law 4875/2021 “Model Tourist Destinations, Integrated Management, Destination Management and Promotion Organizations, Thermal Springs of Greece and other arrangements for the enhancement of tourism development”, the scope of the Memorandum Agreement consists of the preparation of studies to capture and evaluate the actual situation of the destinations, the design and implementation of Integrated Destination Management Plans, the organization and staffing of the new Destination Management and Promotion Organizations (DMMOs), as well as Technical support for the effective governance of the destinations and the implementation of sustainable tourism practices.
The participation of the Municipality of Meteora in this initiative marks an important and innovative step towards the enhancement of tourism development, the improvement of destination management, and the strengthening of cooperation between the competent bodies. Furthermore, according to the Municipality, it ensures sustainable tourism development, enhancing the quality, diversification and competitiveness of the region’s tourism product, aiming to create strong management and promotion structures for the tourist destination, while ensuring transparency, efficiency, and participation of all local stakeholders.
It is worth noting that the Municipality of Meteora is one of the ten Municipalities selected to be financed by the aforementioned project. For the implementation of the project and before the signing of the executive contracts, the conclusion of the Memorandum of Cooperation will precede.
