The municipality of Erymanthos decided to participate as a Full Member in the Network of Cities with Lakes.
The Network of Cities with Lakes was founded in 2012 at the initiative of the Municipality of Dorida and is headquartered in Lidoriki. It has 38 regular members from Greece and Cyprus, with 80 natural and artificial lakes. Regular members of the Network are the municipalities of Agrafa, Agrinio, Aigialeia, Aktio – Vonitsa, Amfilochia, Andravida-Kyllini, Argithea, Veria, Volvi, Deskati, Domokos, Dodoni, Dorido, Edessa, Ziros, Ilida, Iraklia, Thermo, Thiva, Ioannina, Kalavrita, Karditsa, Karpenisi, Larnaca Cyprus, Lamia, Limni Plastira, Marathon, Nafpaktia, Nikolaos Skoufas, Orchomenos, Paranesti, Pogoni, Servia, Sofades, Hersonissos as well as the Community of Voroklini Cyprus. Associated Members are the Region of Central Greece, the European Centre for Environmental Research and Training, the Community of Alassa in Cyprus, the Municipalities of Pogradec and Pustec in Albania, the Municipalities of Bansko and Razlog in Bulgaria and the cities of Lebedyn and Bucha in Ukraine.
The main concern of the network is its further expansion in order to highlight the need for cooperation, both at national and international levels, for the sustainable development and management of lakes and lakeside areas.
The municipalities that are part of the Network of Cities with Lakes benefit in many ways, as participation in a network with common values ??and goals for the implementation of environmental improvements entails the exchange of knowledge and the identification of the best ways to address common environmental problems. Participation contributes to informing citizens about both the direct and indirect improvement of their quality of life. Potentially, municipalities will have the opportunity to promote soft tourism development in the lakes, as well as to participate in development programs co-financed by the European Union.
Among other things, the network’s objectives are the protection of lakes and lakeside areas, the management of water resources, sustainable development, the promotion of cultural, educational, social, and economic relations, as well as their tourist promotion.
