The Municipality is moving forward with a project that goes beyond local needs and opens up new horizons for sports tourism in Chania, with the announcement of the construction of a permanent heated swimming pool measuring 25×15 meters and 1.8 meters deep. The announcement was made by the Mayor of Chania, Panagiotis Simandirakis, during a meeting with parents of aquatic athletes.
The new swimming pool, which will be built in a specially designed area west of the Kladissos Indoor Gymnasium, will temporarily fill the gap left by the reconstruction of the Nea Chora Swimming Pool. At the same time, however, it is expected to be transformed into a permanent sports infrastructure with the potential to host sports preparations and events of a national and international nature.
“Our goal is not to leave Chania without a swimming pool for a single day,” stressed Mr. Simandirakis, noting that the new facility will be ready in early September. “In a few years, our city will have two modern aquatic sports facilities, worthy of its history and capable of making it a magnet for sports tourism.”
The importance of the project is not limited to meeting the needs of local clubs. The heated nature of the new tank, the high construction standards and its direct connection to the existing facilities of the Indoor Gymnasium (WC, changing rooms, gyms, etc.), make the pool capable of hosting training camps and events throughout the year — a key element in extending the tourist season.
