With the aim of strengthening vocational training in the field of alternative tourism and supporting the local community, the Municipality of Sfakion submitted an official request to the Vocational Training School (SAEK) of Apokoronas and the Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, Ms. Sofia Zacharaki, for the creation and operation of a department with the specialty “Mountain Guide” within the boundaries of the municipality.
The request did not arise by chance: twenty-three residents have already expressed interest in this specialty, however, the long distance from the existing educational structures makes it difficult for them to participate. The establishment of the department is estimated to be a catalyst for the development of the area, with multiple benefits:
- Access to education: Addressing geographical isolation and offering equal learning opportunities to residents.
- Strengthening human resources: Training in cutting-edge sectors such as mountaineering, ecotourism, rescue, and first aid.
- Development of ecotourism: The Municipality of Sfakia, already one of the most important alternative tourism destinations in Greece, acquires a tool for exploiting its unique natural landscape.
- Stimulating the local economy: Strengthening employment and supporting small businesses active in tourism and hospitality.
- Environmental protection and security: Training for dealing with crises in mountainous areas, with a direct impact on civil protection.
The Municipality declares its readiness to contribute practically to the implementation of the program, offering suitable classrooms and utilizing its natural terrain as a training field.
