Sfakia enters the international speleological map, following the presentation of the results of the multi-year International Speleological Expedition “Lefka Ori – Sternes Cave 2017–2024”, which revealed the size and importance of one of the most impressive underground formations in Greece.
The event that took place in recent days highlighted the importance of the “Sternes” cave, and now the ambition is for it to become a pole of attraction for lovers of alternative tourism.

“Sternes”: A giant cave deep in the Cretan land
The “Sternes” cave, at an altitude of 2,085 meters above Anopolis, Sfakia, attracts the international scientific community for the eighth consecutive year. The 2024 expedition brought together more than 45 speleologists from seven countries (Greece, the United Kingdom, the USA, Italy, Australia, France, and Slovenia), making the project a unique example of transnational cooperation and research consistency.
During the presentation, new findings were highlighted in fields such as geology, biology and hydrology, while it was confirmed that the “Sternes” cave is now ranked 4th in depth (722 meters) and 4th in length (7,750 meters) among the country’s caves – a first for Crete that also establishes it on the alternative map of the country.
Sfakia: From myth to depth measurement
The success of the mission is not only scientific – it is also touristic, as it is emphasized, as Sfakia is now claiming a place among the top speleological and adventure tourism destinations in the Eastern Mediterranean. The uniqueness of the White Mountains, the authenticity of the landscape, and the scientific value of their caves constitute a narrative advantage for those seeking experiences beyond the conventional.
The event was co-organized by the Speleological Club of Crete (SPOK) and the Municipality of Sfakion, with Mayor Ioannis Zervos emphasizing that the local government actively supports scientific research that highlights the natural wealth and strengthens the potential of alternative tourism in the region.
