Three Regional Governors in Lesvos for the Creation of Thematic Connection Routes

On July 11, Lesvos plans to host an important inter-regional initiative focusing on the sustainable tourism development of the island regions of the country. Specifically, the signing of the “Corfu Declaration: A Vision of Sustainable Tourism Development for the Islands” is planned in Plomari between the Regions of the North Aegean, South Aegean, and Ionian Islands.

In particular, the above meeting will be held with the participation of the Regional Governor of the South Aegean, Mr. Giorgos Hadjimarkos and the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Mr. Ioannis Trepeklis, who will travel to Lesvos at the invitation of the Regional Governor of the North Aegean, Mr. Konstantinos Moutzouris. The main objective is to strengthen interregional cooperation in the tourism sector, with an emphasis on the exchange of know-how, the promotion of good practices, and the joint promotion of island destinations at the national and international level.

The Declaration is part of a broader plan for strategic cooperation and the creation of thematic tourist routes that will geographically and culturally connect the three Regions of the North Aegean, South Aegean and Ionian Islands, strengthening the identity of the islands and promoting them as a single, multi-thematic tourist product, adapted to modern requirements.

As the North Aegean Region states, the connection of a place with international and high-level activities has a positive effect on its tourist image, enhances its recognition, and offers significant opportunities for targeted promotion of its natural, cultural, and gastronomic resources. Especially when it comes to cultural events, the place acquires a more complex and attractive profile, with the ability to attract a public of special interest – scientific, research, or cultural.

In this light, the North Aegean Region plans to support events, scientific conferences, business missions, and festivals, integrating them into the framework of a comprehensive and integrated strategy for cultural and thematic tourism. The signing of the Corfu Declaration is expected to be the first, symbolic and substantial step in this direction, opening new paths of cooperation and development.
