The Sanatoriums of Thessaly: From Medical History to Digital and Touristic Development

The Region of Thessaly has included the initiative “Touristic, Cultural, and Digital Enhancement of Thessaly’s Sanatoriums” in the “Thessaly 2021–2027” Program, with a publicly co-financed budget of €195,000 from the European Regional Development Fund.

The sanatoriums of Thessaly, institutions that thrived in the early 20th century as tuberculosis treatment centers, are now recognized as sites of historical and cultural significance. At a time when the only known treatment for tuberculosis was fresh air, rest, and proper nutrition, the mountainous regions of Thessaly became home to important facilities such as the “Zoodochos Pigi” Sanatorium in Hania, Pelion, as well as others in Pertouli, Portaria, and Petra Olympus.

Beyond their medical function, sanatoriums also served as cultural centers. Renowned poets such as Sikelianos, Myrivilis, and Palamas found inspiration or refuge there, offering patients creative outlets and entertainment during their illness. Despite this significance, these facilities and their histories remain largely unstudied and underutilized.

The project includes the development of an extensive historical study and the implementation of targeted cultural and digital activities. Among them is the creation of a digital virtual tour platform, which will bring the sanatoriums to life through multimedia storytelling, interactive maps, and virtual walkthroughs. This will allow the public to explore the sites remotely and experience their historical essence.

Additionally, a network of guided visits to selected Thessalian sanatoriums will be organized, highlighting their heritage and paths, and a short film will be produced based on the findings of the historical research.

The initiative aims not only to showcase the sanatoriums as an integral part of Thessaly’s cultural legacy but also to boost local tourism, historical research, and cultural production. Furthermore, the Nursing School will receive new equipment, supporting the project’s sustainability and future development programs.

Through this innovative program, Thessaly’s once-forgotten medical buildings are transformed into living monuments of history, culture, and tourism, building a bridge between the region’s past and its future.
