A comprehensive proposal for the creation of small thematic Historical and Environmental Parks on the banks of the Keritis River, in the context of the restoration of the historic stone bridge in Alikianos, was submitted by the Mayor of Platanias, Ioannis Malandrakis.
In a letter to the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Dimas, and the Secretary General of Infrastructure, Dimitrios Anagnopoulos, Mr. Malandrakis proposes the development of the areas east and west of the bridge, with the aim of highlighting both the historical memory and the natural beauty of the area.
The stone bridge, built around 1908 during the prime ministership of Eleftherios Venizelos, is a unique example of architectural and technical craftsmanship. However, its history is also heavily charged, as during World War II, under it, the German occupation forces executed 118 residents, making it a place of martyrdom.
The proposal includes:
Information signs about the history and construction of the bridge.
Highlighting the events of the Occupation and the executions.
Creation of areas for gentle recreation and historical exploration, perfectly harmonized with the natural landscape.
As the Mayor of Platanias emphasized, “the interventions will be made with full respect for the centuries-old trees and the natural beauty of the area, contributing substantially to the identity of the place and constituting a point of historical and cultural reference for future generations and visitors.”
