The Municipality of Sintiki is opening a new chapter for its tourism and cultural identity, submitting a request to the Ministry of Development and Food for the allocation of a plot of land to the municipal community of Vyronia. The goal is to re-establish the Vyronia Aquarium, an institution that marked the region in the past, attracting visitors from every corner of Greece and abroad.
The story behind the Aquarium
Vyronia is not unknown on the tourist map. For years, it was a point of reference, as an Aquarium operated there in a rented property of the OSE. Its operation had highlighted the former Municipality of Petritsi, creating a vibrant attraction for tourists and locals. This experience left a strong imprint, which today the Municipality of Sintiki wishes to revive in more modern and ambitious terms.
The design of the new Aquarium
The new Aquarium will host a rich variety of fish and other organisms that live in the waters of Lake Kerkini and the Strymon River. The aim is to capture the local biodiversity through glass tanks and habitat representations, with full respect for the living conditions of the organisms.
The layout of the space includes a visitor exhibition area, a tank and work area, an analysis laboratory, presentation rooms as well as appropriate infrastructure for the public.
In the main exhibition area, screens and audiovisual material will offer visitors information about the ecosystems of the area, while thematic programs, meetings, conferences and exhibitions will enhance the educational character of the Aquarium.
Guarantees for quality and sustainability
The Municipality is committed to ensuring that the operation of the Aquarium will follow strict scientific protocols. The water will pass through a purification system, its physical parameters will be systematically monitored, while the integration of new organisms will be gradual, in order to ensure the stability of the ecosystem. At the same time, mechanisms will be provided for the safety of the Aquarium and the protection of the exhibits in the event of an accident.
A new tourist and educational hub
In addition to its tourist role, the Vyronia Aquarium will also function as an environmental education center. Students, researchers and ordinary visitors will be able to learn about the threats facing aquatic ecosystems, such as pollution and habitat loss, as well as the initiatives being developed for their protection.
In this way, the Aquarium aspires to cultivate environmental awareness and bring the local community closer to the nature that surrounds it.
The importance for Vyronia and the Municipality of Sintiki
The re-establishment of the Aquarium is a step towards the revival of the tourist physiognomy of Vyronia and the economic strengthening of the region, as new jobs are expected to be created. It is an investment that combines entertainment, science, education and culture, giving new life to a place that knows how to highlight its natural wealth.
In this way, Vyronia is preparing to “dive again” into the waters of Lake Kerkini and Strymon, this time in a more dynamic and organized way. The new Aquarium aspires to become a reference point for tourist development, but also a window of knowledge on how nature and man can coexist creatively.
