Western Greece outlines a strategy for sports tourism

The Region of Western Greece is entering a new phase of tourism development, with the systematic promotion of sports tourism as its central axis. This strategy is part of the broader framework of extroversion and diversification of the Region’s tourism product, as reflected in its new brand “Olympic Land”.

According to the Region, the previous year was a pivotal point, as the Region proceeded with actions to upgrade services, expand target markets and utilize new technological tools, seeking to enhance the recognition of local products and the comparative advantages of the region.

For the next two years, the planning focuses on strengthening Achaia as a sports tourism destination, capitalizing on the experience gained from important international events, such as the Olympic Games, the Mediterranean Coastal Games and the World Gymnastics Championships. This particular region of Western Greece has mature infrastructure and specialized human resources, however, in recent years, the absence of a coordinated advocacy mechanism has limited its presence in this field.

To address this gap, the Region of Western Greece is proceeding with the preparation of a comprehensive Business Plan (Master Plan), which will constitute the main guide for the strategic advocacy of sports events for the coming years. The Operational Plan, which is planned to be implemented in the period 2025–2026, will include:

-mapping of the sports, tourism and hotel infrastructure of Achaia,

-assessment of the region’s potential for hosting disabled competitions,

-analysis of international standards and requirements,

-creation of a database for the preparation of candidacy files,

-proposal of an institutional framework for strategic bids for events.

The aim of the Master Plan is to create a stable mechanism for approaching international bodies and federations, so that Patras and the wider region can return to hosting major events that can yield multiple benefits at the level of the local economy, society and tourism promotion.
