The new golden wellness market: Why Greece needs retreats exclusively for women

The international wellness industry is dynamically turning to women’s health and menopause, a bet that Greece, with its strong spa tradition, should not lose.

In the global wellness industry, worth 6.3 trillion dollars, the most open – but still untapped – opportunity has a female character. Women’s wellness, although it concerns more than half of the population, remains chronically underfunded and undervalued: only 5% of the funds for research and development in the international health market are directed to issues that concern exclusively women.

However, the data is changing. Menopause, hormonal changes and issues related to female physiology are no longer taboo, they are becoming the subject of shows, books and corporate investments. Major international wellness resort chains are reshaping their programs, creating new, scientifically proven wellness experiences that address the needs of women in their 30s to 60s, from sleep and nutrition to hormonal balance, mental resilience and self-image.

This trend is not just about spas or yoga retreats. It is a holistic approach to women’s health, combining medical support, nutrition, mindfulness, holistic therapies and personal development programs. It is a shift from aesthetics to substance: women are no longer looking to “look good”, but to feel good.

From overseas retreats to Mediterranean opportunities

The international market is projected to reach $24.4 billion by 2030, as the global population of menopausal and postmenopausal women will exceed 1.2 billion. Europe and North America are already moving dynamically, with comprehensive wellness programs that combine medical monitoring, personalized exercise and hormone balancing programs.

In Greece, however, despite its strong wellness brand and long tradition in hot springs, herbal treatments and thalassotherapy, there is still no retreat dedicated exclusively to women’s health. This leaves a clear investment gap.

The Greek bases are there, the specialized concept is missing

The country already has excellent infrastructure of adults-only spa resorts, such as Euphoria Retreat in Mystras, which incorporates Chinese and Greek healing philosophies, or Lesante Blu in Zakynthos and Domes Miramare in Corfu, which combine design, sea and rejuvenation. In Crete, Stella Island and Thalassa Beach Resort have already built an international reputation for their holistic approaches, while Mayia Exclusive in Rhodes offers detoxification and relaxation programs in an adults-only environment.

What is missing, however, is a clear targeting of a female audience. A retreat that embraces the needs of women through scientifically designed programs for the life cycle, fertility, menopause and emotional balance.

Greece can become a model destination for women’s wellness

At a time when women make up 2/3 of wellness travelers worldwide, Greece has all the comparative advantages: climate, natural landscape, gastronomy, thermal springs and a cultural background of healing. Investing in women-only retreats is not only socially relevant, it is economically strategic.

International trends indicate that the wellness of the future will be gender-sensitive and science-based. For Greece, entering this market could mean not only expanding the tourist season, but also placing it on the global wellness map as a destination that understands women and supports them at every stage of their lives.
