Airbnb: Gen Z is reviving and shaping fall travel trends

A new balance is forming in the global travel market this fall, with Gen Z emerging as a major driver of demand. According to Airbnb data, searches from travelers under 30 have increased by 26% compared to last year, confirming the shift towards longer and longer trips during a period of lower prices.

The new generation of travelers prioritizes “affordable luxury.” According to a recent Focaldata survey, 80% of Gen Z travelers consider price as a key booking criterion, while 42% consider fall to be an excellent time to travel.

The choices of these travelers are reshaping the market, boosting destinations like Paris, which is emerging as a top choice for “bucket list” trips at a lower cost thanks to the shoulder season.

Airbnb’s Top 10 Destinations for Fall

The top ten destinations with the highest demand for this fall, according to Airbnb data, include Paris, Osaka, Dubai, Miami, Porto, Cartagena, London, Munich, Mexico City and Santiago.

In the US, nature tourism is gaining ground. Vermont is listed as the top state for fall foliage, with Airbnb boosting accessibility through new payment options (“Reserve Now, Pay Later”). Demand for small accommodations with a strong local character – such as log cabins and eco-friendly homes – is increasing, highlighting a trend towards sustainable and alternative forms of accommodation.

At the same time, autumn is emerging as a “second summer season” for coastal destinations. More and more travelers are turning to alternative destinations that offer lower costs and less crowds. The most dynamic destinations in this category are Naha, Japan, Ipojuca, Brazil, Ericeira, Portugal, San Andr?s, Colombia, and Praia Grande, Brazil.
