Naousa: City Center Upgraded with €1.5 Million Project

A major urban redevelopment project is set in motion for Naousa, as the Region of Central Macedonia has included in the 2021–2027 program the initiative “Upgrade of Naousa City Center,” with a total budget of €1,500,000. The intervention aims at the functional, aesthetic, and environmental enhancement of the central square, redefining the city’s relationship with public space.

Reclaiming Public Space
The project’s goal is to return the central square to citizens and visitors as a lively hub of economic, social, and cultural activity. The planned interventions follow a model of soft traffic, reducing vehicle movement and promoting sustainable mobility. The intervention area covers a total of 5,536.98 sq.m., of which 5,055.42 sq.m. concern the square, and the remainder the redevelopment of Theofilou Street, one of the city’s main commercial streets. Upon completion, Naousa’s center will become a space of high aesthetic and functional value, enhancing the local economy, improving residents’ quality of life, and strengthening the city’s attractiveness as a tourist destination.

Modern Design and Bioclimatic Approach
The redevelopment includes new pavements, lighting, seating, urban equipment, and plantings, aiming to improve thermal comfort and reduce environmental impact. The design follows bioclimatic principles, combining low and high vegetation, creating shaded areas, and using natural materials. Additionally, water features and green spaces will be incorporated, contributing to aesthetic enhancement and better air quality in the urban center.

Improved Accessibility and Social Life
The project places particular emphasis on accessibility, ensuring that all spaces are fully accessible for people with disabilities, the elderly, and parents with strollers. Safe pedestrian paths will connect main commercial areas, public buildings, and cultural monuments, while the square will include recreational areas and seating along streets to promote social interaction among residents.

New Landmark and Cultural Identity
Special attention is given to the creation of a new monumental landmark reflecting the philosophical connection between Aristotle and Alexander the Great, highlighting Naousa’s historical identity. Additionally, thematic and informative elements will be installed to showcase cultural heritage, while designated spaces will be developed to host cultural, social, and sports events.
