The direct air connection with the United States constitutes the decisive step for Crete to move from an indirect presence to measurable and strategic penetration in the American market, as despite the overall growth recorded by Greece in arrivals from the U.S., the island today remains “invisible” in official statistics as an independent destination, with the majority of American travelers arriving via Athens.
At the same time, the new airport in Kasteli is emerging as a catalyst that can change the balance in tourism flows between the two countries, thus creating the conditions for direct flights and for a substantial upgrade of Crete’s position in the long-haul tourism game.
Direct connection: the critical bet for Crete
This very importance of the direct air connection between the U.S. and Crete is highlighted by the President of the Heraklion Hoteliers Association, Nikos Chalkiadakis, pointing out to TN that at the moment, American visitation to Crete is limited and cannot be accurately captured. As he emphasizes, arrivals mainly occur via “Eleftherios Venizelos” Airport, resulting in Crete losing its footprint in statistical data. At the same time, he expresses certainty that with the operation of the new airport in Kasteli, conditions will be created for direct flights from the U.S., a development of strategic importance for the local tourism economy and for attracting high-spending visitors.
Strong rise of the American market for Greece
Mapping the American market, during her recent visit to the United States, the Minister of Tourism highlighted the spectacular growth of the American market for the country. As she noted, in 2024, 1,547,400 Americans chose Greece for holidays and business trips, with revenues amounting to 1.58 billion euros.
For 2025, in the nine months from January to September, arrivals from the U.S. showed an increase of 5.6% compared to 2024, while revenues rose by +11.7%. These figures, as noted, reflect both the high interest of the American market—two out of three Americans declare an intention to travel to Greece—and the decisive contribution of direct air connections. Currently, there are 103 direct flights per week from the Eastern States to Athens, while for the first time, a connection from the West Coast was inaugurated. It is worth noting that in 2026, a new direct flight from Dallas is planned.
Crete: growing interest, without clear statistical capture
Meanwhile, Crete is emerging as one of the most attractive destinations for Americans outside mainland Greece. Traveler interest studies show that the island ranks second worldwide as a rising destination for 2025, with a +390% increase in searches compared to last year. According to recent INSETE data, international arrivals at Heraklion and Chania airports reached 5.0 million passengers, an increase of +4.6%, while domestic arrivals exceeded 1.1 million, up +10.7%. Moreover, according to the Deputy Regional Governor for Tourism, Kyriakos Kotsologlou, in recent statements to TN, he stressed that a significant portion of domestic flights actually involve international visitors, mainly Americans and Israelis, who take their final flight to Crete via Athens or Thessaloniki.
Contacts of the Heraklion Hoteliers Association with the U.S. Embassy
Finally, it should be reminded that the Heraklion Hoteliers Association recently held a working meeting with the Economic Attaché of the United States Embassy in Greece, focusing on strengthening the tourist flow from the U.S. to Crete. The discussion took place in a positive and cooperative atmosphere, with emphasis on the future prospects of the market and on the operation of the new airport in Kasteli, which is expected to decisively enhance the island’s accessibility.
At the same time, the possibility of direct air connections with major American cities was examined, as well as strengthening the link with travel agents through the Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce. The Association emphasized that these contacts constitute a substantial step toward the stable and long-term strengthening of the American market for Crete, at a time when interest is evident and the goal remains a direct flight. In any case, in the summer, the new U.S. Ambassador to Greece will visit Crete as a guest of the island’s hoteliers.
