Minister Kountoura's plan to get Greece into Top-5 global destinations

Alternate Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura pointed out Greece’s resilience in difficult times and Greek tourism’s improved performance despite the adversities as evidence that the country can become one of the world’s top 5 destinations in terms of quality offerings and number of arrivals.

During the 26th “The Greek Economy Conference” this week, Ms Kountoura announced that Greece’s tourism strategy is based on six pillars: lengthening of the season, penetration into new markets, creation and development of thematic and alternative forms of tourism, unified visibility and promotion of tourism in cooperation with the regions and the private sector, coding tourism legislation, strengthening official structures of the ministry and encouraging entrepreneurship and investment.

The minister stressed the constructive cooperation that exists between the Ministry, tourism operators, industry players and regional and local authorities which produces positive results already visible.

Global competitiveness

The Greek tourist market maintained its global competitiveness in difficult times for the domestic economy and for society. We dealt with the unprecedented issue of capital controls promptly and effectively with initiatives and actions and thus convinced the world’s traveling public to trust us,” Mrs Kountoura said and added: “We have worked hard with a sense of responsibility towards our fellow citizens and our country to keep the momentum in Greek tourism going, promoting an image of Greece that in the most critical hours responded immediately, sought opportunities, implemented innovative ideas and continued to offer high quality products and services to visitors, securing an attractive and stable environment for investment.”
