Ombudsman: Cyprus church's position on LGBT parades to be investigated

Comments made by the church regarding the LGBT community in Cyprus should be criminally investigated, the Ombudswoman’s office said on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the Archbishop of Cyprus, Chrysostomos II, said that the LGBT community should be ashamed of the pride parades they hold.

The Attorney General’s office told SigmaLive, regarding a complaint filed by the LGBT right’s group Action, that they have not yet received the group’s statement in order to conduct a review.

The Ombudswoman’s office added in their statement that the position taken by the church “is in substance, abusive, insulting, and devaluing as it targets a group of people and their legally protected rights pertaining to their sexual orientation and gender identity.

The office’s statement said that all people are innocent “straight” in the face of the law and that “no type of homophobic speech, under the name of any religion, tradition, or ideology is acceptable.”
