The Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA) has launched a new service called Images of the Day as of Monday, January 16 in the 41 metro stations in Athens.
The new service is the result of cooperation between the ANA and the urban rail transport organisation STASY, offering metro passengers the news of the day through 20 photo frames with news subtitles, shown on the 132 television screens operating at the entrances and on the platforms of the metro stations.
Images of the Day will offer a window onto events and developments concerning creativity, art, innovation, sports, everyday life, but also the brighter side of life, as well as useful information that facilitates daily life, such as the weather forecast and holidays initially, with more to be added later.
“I am told there are some passengers who missed their train on Monday because they were watching ANA’s news and photos,” the president of STASY Stavros Stefopoulos said in statements to the ANA’s radio station Praktoreio 104.9 FM.
The initiative was also hailed by Digital Policy, Communications and Media Minister Nikos Pappas, while speaking at an event for the signature of the agreement between STASY and ANA for ‘Images of the Day’ held at Syntagma metro station.
“When public networks do not fall victim to outside interests, then they can offer citizens a great deal,” Pappas said, thanking the managements of the two companies and ANA staff for their contribution toward providing news on the Athens transport system.
Attica Regional Authority governor Rena Dourou praised the initiative and announced that the regional authority hopes to boost its cooperation with ANA in order to bring about more such initiatives benefiting the public.
ANA Board President and General Director Michalis Psilos, on his part, said the service was the realisation of a dream dating back several years, implemented through the friendly stance adopted by STASY and its president. He noted that the agreement was a landmark since it brought ANA closer to the citizens.
“Our aim is to be at their side, to hear their concerns,” he said. “We hope to open a window to the world and at the same time to offer useful information to the public.”
STASY chief Stavros Stefopoulos said the agreement was high-level service with zero cost that “bears the ANA’s seal of reliability” and “enriches humdrum daily life with attractive images.”
