Survey: Athens is an established holiday destination – the profile of its tourists

Athens is greatly appreciated as a holiday destination for its visitors, with “great archaeological and cultural interest” as its strongest asset, according to a study conducted by the Athens Attica and Argosonic Hotel Association and GBR Consulting and presented during the association’s 48th annual General Assembly.

The survey, held from the end of June to early September, asked 1,500 visitors staying at an Athens hotel to rate their experience in the Greek capital and was supported by City Contact and the University of Western Attica.

Tourists staying in Athens gave the Greek capital a score of 7.9 out of 10 while almost all of the visitors (96 percent) said they would recommend to their friends to visit Athens and about half of them had come to the city before.

Most Europeans and Americans of all ages elected Athens for recreation and holidays (up to 79%), a fact which proves that the Greek capital is an established holiday destination with “great archaeological and cultural interest” for 81% of its visitors.

Furthermore, the percentage of recurring visitors reaches 45%, a very satisfactory index for a city break destination. Modern Athens as a pole of attraction does not particularly impress visitors (15% -27% depending on their age), but the fact that it excites young people aged 18-30 is promising.

The Athens coastal front and the Attica Riviera also attract younger ages (up to 60%) and are very popular for swimming (up to 82%) even though 50% of the respondents did not know that Athens has a coastal front.

Overall, the experience of Athens for the majority of its visitors was better than their expectations.
