Mega yacht marina in Patras – Go ahead for city-changing investment

The city of Patras is on the threshold of a new era, as the investment proposal for the creation of the “Paradise Mega Yacht Marina” was approved, a pioneering project with a total budget of almost 10 million euros. The project, which has been included in the “Tourism Development” action of the Recovery and Resilience Fund, promises to radically change the city’s relationship with the sea and to elevate Patras to a hub of maritime tourism.

Development perspective and strategic importance

The new marina will extend to the northern port basin of the old port, between the Agios Nikolaos pier and the Astigos pier, covering an area of 27,181 sq m. It is planned to accommodate up to 212 vessels of various sizes, including large yachts, offering modern infrastructure that competes with global facilities.

With a maximum building area of 5,308 sq m, it will include shops, offices, tourist services and hygiene infrastructure, creating at least 300 direct jobs and more than 1,200 indirect ones, strengthening the local economy.

Benefits for the local community and economy

The marina is expected to be a growth lever for the city, contributing to the creation of new businesses, such as:

Health-related establishments (cafes, restaurants).
Commercial shops and tourist offices.
Marine equipment and boat or vehicle rental businesses.
In addition, the dry berth facilities at the South Port will offer positions for boat maintenance and winterization, adding another 30 full-time jobs.

Finally, in combination with seaplanes and the upcoming cruise (2026), the strategic plan is for the Port of Patras to regain a leading role in maritime tourism.

Environmental and social approach

The marina master plan emphasizes environmental protection and the creation of an attractive public space, with pedestrian walkways, green spaces, tree planting, and seating areas. Pedestrian access remains free, strengthening the connection of the city with the waterfront.

Reactions and prospects

The project has sparked debate. Some stakeholders express concerns about the commercialization of the port, while others see the marina as an opportunity to promote Patras as a tourist and nautical destination.

The CEO of the Port of Patras, Panagiotis Anastasopoulos, in previous statements, had emphasized: “The time has come to leave introversion behind and take advantage of the unique opportunity of maritime tourism. In 2026, the first large vessels will dock.”

Milestones and Timeline

According to the timeline set by the approval of the investment plan supported by the Ministry of Tourism, the project must be completed by December 31, 2025. The first phase of work is required to begin within three months of the approval of the support, with the support of almost 100% of public expenditure, covering 99.85% of the budget.
