Iconic star of tourism drama "Girls in the Sun" Yannis Voglis passes away at 79

Greek Popular theater and film actor Yannis Voglis has passed away, at the age of 79, on Wednesday morning.

The actor was recently hospitalized at an increased care unit and underwent two surgeries. The hospital announced that multiorgan failure was the cause of death.

Voglis was born in Athens in 1937 and studied drama at the school of Pelos Katselis. His first stage appearance took place in 1961 in a play directed by Karolos Koun.

At the same time he pursued a career in film and was best known for his appearance in the 1968 drama Girls in the Sun. He also received critical praise for his performance in 1966’s The Soil was Colored Red.

According to the Girls in the Sun plot, a young English tourist called Annabel meets a Greek shepherd during her vacation on a Greek Island. On their first encounter in a field,the shepherd approaches Annabel wanting to give her some almonds but scared of his rustic and rough appearance she misunderstands his intentions and runs away. Soon, he is found in prison accused of the supposed rape of Annabel.She regrets overreacting and tries to persuade the authorities to release him. Gradually, they fall in love and after being released from prison he follows her to Athens but she must return back home and it seems that their innocent love doesn’t have a future.
