Visitors to Greek museums and archaeological sites up 12.4 pct in January

Visitors to Greek museums in January 2016 posted a 12.4 percent increase, however, revenues from entrance tickets fell 1.1 pct compared to the same month in 2015, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) said on Friday.

The number of free admission visitors in January increased by 33.7 percent.

Regarding archaeological sites, in January 2016, an increase of 6.7 percent was recorded in the number of visitors and a 48.6 percent increase in the number of free admission visitors. A decrease of 10.6 percentwas observed in their receipts, in comparison with the corresponding month of 2015.

In the meanwhile, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) – Hellenic National Committee announced that it will honor the National Archaeological Museum in Athens on the occasion of International Museum Day 2016 on Wednesday, May 18 and that admission is free in museums on International Museum Day.

The Museum, this year celebrates its 150th anniversary and is being honored for its contribution to culture and the nationwide character of its collections, representing universal values.

It will host a series of events from May 16 until May 22 including an opening event to be held on May 18 at the museum at 7pm along with a music concert.
