Islamic mosque in Athens will cost Greek taxpayers 1 million euros

The construction of the Islamic mosque in Athens will cost the Greek taxpayers about 1 million euros, according to estimates by the General Accounting Office of the State.

The relevant amendment was introduced in the Greek parliament and the clause concerning the erection of the mosque in Athens was included in the general draft concerning the production of electrical energy via renewable energy sources. The bill is expected to be submitted in parliaments on Thursday.

As argued in the accompanying explanatory report, Athens is the only European capital without an Islamic temple, a fact which undermines the country’s international image and credibility.

Given the massive increase of fundamentalist opinions and actions, the prompt completion of the project is “more imperative than ever”, the report concludes.
