Cyprus' Archbishop Chrysostomos II: Homosexuals have "gone too far"

Archbishop Chrysostomos II of Cyprus has said that his statements regarding homosexuality in schools were misinterpreted, Sigma TV reported on Wednesday.

In statements outside the Presidential Palace, the Archbishop said that he wants schools to be created that create upstanding citizens, and teach them from a young age “to have Christ in their hearts.”

“SHAME ON THEM”

However, Archbishop Chrysostomos did criticise homosexuality saying: “Shame on them. They have gone too far and hold pride parades. Let them be happy with their pride parades. I am not interested in people like that.

He expressed the sentiment that he can do nothing with people who are not fighting to better themselves.

That is why we want to create schools, so we can mould upstanding citizens,” he said.

The Archbishop did mention that the church does not “hate” homosexuals, but instead “loves them”.

He added, “There have always been homosexuals throughout history, though in the past they did not take pride in their sexuality in contrast to today.”

LGBT COMMUNITY REACTS

In response to Archbishop Chrysostomos’ latest statements, the LGBT rights group Accept-LGBT Cyprus has filed a complaint against the Archbishop with the Attorney General’s Office, the authority which deals with the promotion of hate due to sexual orientation or gender identity.
