Greece will be part of the political initiative to protect cultural heritage, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said in his address at the UNESCO conference on safeguarding cultural heritage, which concluded in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.
“There will be a political declaration and I reiterate our country’s willingness to participate. We believe in this new initiative for the protection of cultural heritage and this must be done in the protective framework of UNESCO’s conventions,” he told participants from 40 countries.
“Today more than ever we need a close cooperation in the global management of our joint cultural heritage, thereby demonstrating UNESCO’s important role and that of the relevant laws.”
He also said Greece is participating actively in countering heritage destruction and illegal trade and trafficking of cultural works.
Following the end of the conference, participants signed the “Abu Dhabi Declaration” which pledged support to UNESCO’s global coalition aimed at protecting heritage from destruction and trafficking. The conference was organized jointly by the UAE and France.
