Five Greek school teams selected in the Astro Pi European space contest

In a huge and very important win, 5 groups of Greek school students have been included in the 45 teams selected to be part of the 3rd and final part of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Astro Pi contest. Students will see their experiments carried out on board the International Space Station (ISS).

The 5 Greek schools teams are: Delta TALOS ed-UTH-robotix (Instructional Robotics Workshops), Weightless Mass (Evosmos Intercultural High School), 49th Astro Pi Teamwork (49th Patras Elementary School), Astro Traveller (12th Petroupolis Elementary School) and GKGF-1 (Kanithos High School). They were selected from a pool of 184 teams of overall 1.800 students from 15 European countries, designing and suggesting experiments to be carried out on board ISS.

Astro Pi is the name of a small computer developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation, in collaboration with the UK Space Agency and ESA. There are two very special Astro Pi’s. Their names are Ed and Izzy, and they have been qualified for spaceflight. They are now onboard the ISS for students like you to use. Astro Pi computers come with a set of sensors and gadgets that can be used to run cool scientific experiments. This set of sensors is called ‘Sense HAT’, and it can be used to sense movements, and provide measurements for humidity, temperature and pressure, and detect radiation.

The European Astro Pi challenge invites school students to design a scientific experiment that can be run using Astro Pi Ed’s sensors, and to write the computer code with which the Astro Pi needs to be programmed in order to execute this experiment on the ISS. Data obtained through the space experiments will be sent back to Earth and distributed to the teams for a period up until May 15. This will give students the opportunity to work as true scientists and analyze the data collected.
