The play “Tonight: Lola Blau” can be an excellent vehicle for a solo actress and a pianist. It tells the story of the career of a young Jewish actor who starts out in 1938 Vienna, just a few moments before Austria’s annexation to the Third Reich. It follows Lola Blau from Switzerland to America, and from her first steps to realizing her dream of becoming a great star, all the way to the realization of the illusory nature of things and her return, broken, to post-war Vienna, and the conclusion that people never change.
The show’s loving and tough tale is told through 20 cabaret songs touching on the comical and the tragic alike, in a performance combining ragged numbers, political jokes and music of that time, making for a jolt of irony and a strong punch to the stomach, as great historical events are told through the heroine’s short life.
The play was first shown on October 17, 1971 at the Small Theater of the Josefstadt suburb of Vienna. At the MCF Theater, the caustic satire of the famous Austrian cabaretist Georg Kreisler is directed by Michael Seibel, and stars Katerina Giamalis in the homonymous role, joined onstage by pianist Tassos Spiliotopoulos.
