60 events at the 2017 Aeschylus Festival in Elefsis, Attica

Making steady and forceful steps, the city of Elefsina charts its course towards European Cultural Capital 2021. In this “steady and unwavering course”, as city mayor, George Tsoukalas, describes it, the Aeschylus Festival organized by the city of Elefsina over the past 43 years, becomes “the forefront of civilization, and is harmoniously integrated into this great vision for the city being made true”.

Until 30 November, the festival will host about 60 events, including performances, concerts, visual art installations, exhibitions, screenings, performances, lectures, international conferences, races and parties. Most of the events will take place at the Old Olive Mill. The festival has also included several events with free admission, “anyone can claim ownership of their culture”.

The festival’s opening took place on June 9, at the Old Olive Mill, with the inauguration of Danae Stratos’ artistic installation “Above the earth, under the clouds,” edited by Alexandros Koroxenidis. The exhibition will run until July 30, as well as on August 19 – October 15. “Above the earth, under the clouds” is a large-scale in situ installation, made specifically for the Old Olive Mill and Elefsina. With soil and water being its basic materials, and with the clay vase serving as the dominant shape, this work engages Elefsina’s rich historical stratification from antiquity to its present and long-standing industrial profile and structure.
