Theater scholar and critic Eleni Varopoulou heads “INTERNATIONAL AREA”, Peloponnese / Argos – Mycenae, the new artistic and research site-specific project to be held in Argos, Mycenae and the wider Argolis region from July 3-9. This international project comes 20 years after the conclusion of the historic site-specific Argos Festival (1994-1997), which held its events at ancient and modern architectural monuments, archaeological sites and the area’s factories. The new project, funded by the Peloponnese Prefecture, the Argolida Prefectural Unit, in cooperation with the City of Nafplio and the Argolis Union of Agricultural Cooperatives, starts this year from the Prefecture of Argolida, aspiring to continue with its initiatives in the region throughout the year, and to expand to other parts of Greece and abroad.
As stated by Peloponnese Prefect, Petros Tatoulis, the project is an “intervention, aiming to mobilize citizens into a subversive yet creative logic, in order to develop a necessary collective consciousness”.
This year, the project turns on the thematic axis of archeology and heterotopia, based on the diptych of the “Polytoponos Iannis Xenakis” and the “Argoliki Industriale”.
