Dorota Kobiela’s and Hugh Welchman’s “Loving Vincent”, the first film in movie history to have been painted entirely by hand, will be making its Greek premiere at the Melijazz festival in Leonidio, Arkadia in Peloponnese. Each of the films 65,000 frames were first shot like any other feature film, and were then transformed into a painting painted by the hands of 125 professional painters who traveled from all over the world to asssist in the production of “Loving Vincent” at three Studios in Poland and Greece.
Leonidio’s Melijazz Festival takes place in Leonidio, Arkadia, for 12 straight years, and is considered to be one of the Peloponnese’s most important cultural institutions. The theme of this year’s festival, held July 5-9, is the visual arts and their interaction with the movies. This year, all the festival’s parallel events are based on “Loving Vincent”. Through paintings and workshops for children, Melijazz will endeavour to bridge the work of Vincent Van Gogh and of prominent Leonidio painter Nestoras Varveris, who was forgotten after his death.
