Following an invitation by the Philippi Festival, American writer-director Laura Tesman, at is coming from New York’s Brooklyn College, to Greece, in order to premiere at the Philippi Ancient Theater, “Io”, her play written specifically for the 60th Philippoi Festival, investigating the “space” between the character of Io, as we see her in Aeschylus’s Prometheus Bound, and the same character, as discussed in the Suppliants.
The story of Io reaches the audience fragmented. The heroine is always found at a line; between girl and woman; human and beast; humiliated and silent and still hunted. And yet, she persists. Her story has been told time and again, but she never owns it. This play inquires about her real identity and motives into a long and epic journey.
Rehearsals, taking place from July 20 until the performance itself, are open to the public.
