Film Commission seeks photos to showcase Greece for movie location

Notorious for being unfriendly and difficult with foreign film makers, Greece now is trying to woo them with a proposal by the Film Commission asking photographers to provide images that could show off the country as a shooting location.

Bureaucracy, bribery and red tape have forced potential film makers away to other countries although Woody Allen shot parts of his film Mighty Aphrodite in ancient Corinthos and the 2013 movie Before Midnight was filmed significantly in the southern Peloponnese and featured the home of the late Hellenophile Patrick Leigh Fermor.

Others recently include Mamma Mia, shot on Skopelos in 2008, Nia Vardalos getting permission to shoot on the Acropolis for 2009’s My Life in Ruins, and Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, a WWII piece shot in Kefalonia in 2001, the 2014 movie The Two Faces of January and perhaps the best – Zorba the Greek in 1964 – but other prospective movies were shot elsewhere with filmmakers complaining the government was

In a recent announcement, the Commission invited professional and amateur photographers, directors of photography, location managers and enthusiasts with an eye for film to respond to this challenge with photographs that showcase the diversity of Greece’s natural and historical assets, without the interference of commercial interests, Kathimerini said. The finalists’ images will then be put on display in an exhibition.

Those interested in taking part in the initiative should register and submit their photographs at www.locateyourphoto.gr.

The Film Commission will then select the best of the photographs submitted and these will be shown on all the websites belonging to the Greek Film Center.
