Report: Greek archaeologist chases looted antiquities

Christos Tsirogiannis, a Greek forensic archaeologist who had unearthed and reported numerous cases of looted ancient artefacts in Greece and abroad, speaks of his disappointment that his beloved country has “zero cooperation” with him.

In an exclusive interview with the Greek Reporter, Tsirogiannis notes that he has been sending information to the Greek authorities regarding looted ancient art works, asking nothing in return, but gets no reply, or acknowledgment.

“I am disappointed from the stance of the Greek authorities. I know that Greece can do far, far better in the area of looted antiquities”, he stresses.

Tsirogiannis is researching antiquities smuggling networks and the market for looted cultural objects. He is a lecturer and an academic researcher at the Association for Research into Crimes against Art.

In late July he made headlines when, through his research, New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art was required to hand over to Manhattan’s district attorney a Greco-Roman vessel that was looted from Italy.
