Hellenic Parliament Foundation: Conference on “Art and Democracy”

From December 7-9, the Hellenic Parliament Foundation is holding an interdisciplinary conference titled “Art and Democracy”. During the conference, historians, political scientists, philosophers, and literary theorists will speak to establish a line of dialogue on comparative reading and interpretation of international and Greek movements, but also of ideological and artistic practices and platforms.

The conference’s sections range from the European revolutionary movements of 1848, through the revolutionary and national movements, WWI, the Russian Revolution, WWII, and even globalization.

Among the many themes to be addressed are the freedom of artistic expression, the individual and society, art during parliamentary crises, art and the concept of decadence, national art, intellectual and artistic vanguards of the late 19th century and the interwar years, as well as the iconoclastic modernism in literature and the art of the early 20th century.

Addressing the conference will be Hellenic Parliament Speaker, Nikos Voutsis, and Hellenic Parliament Foundation Secretary-General, Associate Professor, Niki Maroniti.
