The Boston Lykeion Ellinidon’s Traditional Music Department offers participatory courses in Greek music, with the support of Dr. Pantel Vokonas.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn about Hellenic musical culture through classes, workshops, concerts and performances. The Boston Lykeion Ellinidon’s Traditional Music Department is headed by Sandy Theodorou, a vocalist, accordionist, and laouto player who specializes in traditional Greek regional music and urban rebetika.
Those interested will have to register for six weekly two-hour sessions. Courses will be taught by master level instructors and students may elect to play or sing sample selections representative of the theme of the course.
The first course, The Music of Greece: From Homer to Xenakis, will be taught by Lefteris Kordis, DMA, associate professor at Berklee College of Music and starts on February 12th, 2018 and will run through March 19.
The course focuses on special topics in the music of Greece from the 3rd century C.E. to the 1970s. It will investigate the ways in which Byzantine and Acritic music and neighboring music traditions laid the foundation for the development of Demotic music (island and mainland), the music of the Cretan Renaissance, and other significant genres, such as Asia Minor (smyrneika, politika), rebetika, laika, entehna and political activist songs.
